hard-as-nails Elmore Leonard but…
Unfortunately, to this reader’s taste, it takes a turn towards the
mawkish as the focus shifts to a child’s perspective. Though the eyes of the
young many fine tales have been told, but here the child feels somewhat stiff
and a mere stand-in for story exposition.
Strong start, there’s always that.
